To my husband on our 20th anniversary

It’s easy to forget, to deny

Just how far we’ve come.

We’ve spent so much time

Loved and fought

But what has our investment bought?

So now we learn to hold our treasures closer

Each other

Our children

Perspective

Simplicity

Freedom from a need to be right, to know

Now we honor the effort that forged them, sustains them

Though that effort seems sometimes mundane

More like endurance.

The only trace of the fires we chased

Delicate tendrils of smoke

And another fire on the horizon

The promise of its warmth sure to be

Only memory

by the time we find our way.

So we’ll stay,

Fan these embers,

Remember why we sought this place.

And the kindling that feeds this flame:

The everyday, the mundane

Made beautiful again

and again.

Happy 20 years (20!!!), Honey. I love you.
